Rancho San Antonio is one of the Mid-peninsula Open Space District’s most popular preserves, probably because it is easily accessible from the 280 freeway. 1,000 people a day visit this wonderful place. Not to worry, with over 2,000 acres, there is plenty of room for everybody to have their own quiet experience with nature. Also located here is Deer Hollow Farm which is managed by the City of Mountain View Recreation division. Rancho San Antonio has 23 miles of trails for hiking along with some trails for horseback riding and biking.
Many are stroller friendly. It is an ideal place to explore nature's wonders. Streams flow in the winter, filling a seasonal pond. Striking views of the bay area can be seen from the hilltops, along with a variety of wild animals. In spring does and their spotted fawns graze the grass beside the trails, not in the least concerned that you are passing by. Baby quail small enough to fit in the palm of your hand hurry into the underbrush. Bunnies are everywhere, so tame you could almost pet them. Baby ducks swim on the pond. If you’re lucky you might even spot a coyote or a bobcat or perhaps a dozen wild turkeys on the road to the water tank. In the fall the bucks with giant antlers come out of hiding looking for girls. How lucky we are in the South Bay to have the Mid-peninsula Open Space District. Take advantage of it today! |
