Mrs. Winchester was convinced by a medium that she wouldn't die as long as she kept building on her house. She did just that for 38 years, ending up with 160 rooms containing, among other things, a stairway going to the ceiling, doors opening into walls, a window in the floor, and upside down posts. The day we went it was rainy and dark giving the house a spooky quality that intrigued our 8 year old grandson who kept saying "cool", but made our 6 year old granddaughter somewhat hesitant. She took her Grandmother's hand which seemed to alleviate her concerns and actually found being a bit scared rather fun. We had a long wait for our tour which we spent in the gift shop and playing Simon says along with ongoing contests to see who could stand on one leg the longest. The mansion tour which includes the gardens and the firearms museum is $19.95 for adults, $16.95 for seniors and $13.95 for children 6-12. Additionally there is a behind the scenes tour, but you must be ten to go. Open daily except Christmas. Easy to find on Winchester Blvd. off 280. Go to their
web site - listed below - for a map or phone 408 247 2101. |
